Calculating profit and loss on a trade is done by multiplying the dollar value of a one-tick move by the number of ticks the futures contract has moved since you purchased the contract. This calculation gives you profit or loss per contact, then you need to multiply this number by the number of contracts you own to get the total profit or loss for your position.
It is paramount to be familiar with contract specifications. Contract specifications can be checked on Meta Trade (right click on the instrument – specifications)
A trader buys one WTI contract at $78.14.
The price of WTI is now $78.21.
The profit-per-contract for the trader is $78.21-78.14 = $0.07
Therefore, the contract has moved $0.07 divided by $0.01 = 7 ticks
The total move in dollars is 7 ticks x $10 per tick = $70
The total profit would be $70 x the number of contracts the trader owns, in this case 1 as the volume indicates.
Losses are calculated in the same manner as gains.
